Anthony J. Sadberry, 59, born October 22, 1949 in Burleson County, Texas to Horatio E. Sadberry, Sr. and Ophelia (Jones) Sadberry died peacefully in the cabin he built on Teal Prairie, Burleson County, Texas with his loving daughter Andrea by his side. He led an amazing life, but never forgot his roots. The many friends Anthony made throughout his amazing journey remained his friends until his death.
Anthony's education began in Burleson County, Texas. His senior year of high school, 1968, was spent at North Shore High School in Houston where he graduated with honors. Integration was mandated and Anthony would be the first and only African-American student at that school to usher in this historic event - not an enviable position. He was initially denied enrollment at UT-Austin because he had only one year at an accredited high school. He enrolled at Navarro College in Corsicana where he served as president of the Student Government Association and was a national officer in Phi Theta Kappa, also the first African-American person to serve in that position. After graduating with honors at Navarro, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at UT-Austin, graduating with honors and serving as President of the Student Body Association. Anthony attended Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C. receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1975.
Anthony worked as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the Attorney General of Texas under John Hill from 1975 to 1977. He worked in private practice in several firms including Sullivan, King, Henri & Sadberry, P.C., Oldenettel & Sadberry, P.C., Soules & Wallace, P.C. and Epstein Becker & Green P.C.
In 1993, Anthony was appointed by Governor Ann Richards to serve as one of the three members of the Texas Lottery Commission, a position he held until 2001. In 2006, he was named Executive Director of the Texas Lottery where he served until his death.
Anthony led an exemplary life and blessings seemed to fall in his lap. He was truly a great man. He is preceded in death by his parents, Horatio E. Sadberry, Sr. and Ophelia (Jones) Sadberry. He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Andrea Joi Sadberry-Flood, her husband Jonathan, and precious granddaughter Mercedez, all of Round Rock, Texas, many relatives and wonderful friends who will miss him dearly.
A viewing will be Friday, October 31, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home, 530 Hwy. 36 South, Caldwell, Texas 77836. Services will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Teals Prairie Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Larry Brandt, Dr. Glenn Cochran, Dave Talbot, Mike Heiskell, and Tom Clowe. Honorary pallbearers include Susie Tritter, Hon. Susan S. Soussan, Luther H. ("Luke") Soules III, Harriet Miers, Lisa Corker and Michael Perrin.
