Vernon Lee Howard

Funeral services for Vernon Lee Howard, 71, of Somerville, are set for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Interment will follow in the Evangelical United Church of Christ Cemetery in Lyons. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville. Mr. Howard died at his home Sunday, February 28, 2010.
He was born November 2, 1938, the son of Joseph Edgar and Ira Justice Howard in Imboden, Arkansas. After serving in the U.S. Army, Vernon relocated to Comfort, Texas where he worked and retired from Southwestern Engineering. He was married to Alta Faye Martin on June l5, 1982 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Together they moved to Katy in l983 where he worked for Fort Bend Telephone Company until his retirement in l998. Vernon was a volunteer who helped with the handicapped deer hunt and was a volunteer for Burleson County Flag Detail. Family members said that he loved to hunt and fish and most especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marie Jarrett.
Survivors include his wife, Alta Faye Howard of Somerville; his sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Cindy Qualls of Hemphill; and Bryan and Sanesa Howard of Victoria; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy Qualls-Tucker and her husband, Arthur Tucker of Brookshire, and Verna and Jack Feild of Katy; a brother and sister-in-law, LaVon and Barbara Howard of Wichita, Kansas, grandchildren, Eric Carr, Brandon Carr, Kristen Qualls, Emily (Ed) Qualls, Carlee Howard, Ashley Feild, Cassidy Feild, and Mylee Howard; and great-granchildren, Kaelyn Carr and Peyton Carr; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Family members have requested that memorials be made to Hospice of Brazos Valley, Inc., 502 West 26th Street, Bryan, TX 77803-9900 or to Evangelical United Church of Christ of Lyons, P. O. Box 440, Lyons, TX 77863.
